PTA Takes Action: Over 4 Million SIMs Blocked in 6 Months

During a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat, chaired by Senator Rana Maqbool Ahmad, the Chairman of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) revealed that a significant number of SIM cards, totaling 4 million, have been blocked in the last six months.

The PTA Chairman emphasized the extensive oversight role the authority plays, managing 2,000 licensees across diverse sectors. With a responsibility to cater to 191 million mobile users and 127 million broadband subscribers, the PTA has been proactive in ensuring compliance.

Challenges in the fiberization process were acknowledged during the meeting. The Chairman highlighted the importance of streamlining fiberization procedures to effectively address ongoing challenges faced by the PTA.

Senator Mushtaq Ahmed, a committee member, drew attention to critical areas such as cybersecurity, the presence of illicit content on social media platforms, safeguarding individual privacy, and upholding consumer rights. The committee chair sought comprehensive written recommendations from the PTA on how these issues could be effectively tackled.
