Senator Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar Named Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan

In a significant development, Senator Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, a distinguished member of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), has been appointed as the caretaker prime minister, as announced by a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on Saturday.

This decision follows a second round of consultations between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Raja Riaz. President Arif Alvi has formally approved the summary in accordance with Article 224 1A.

Addressing the media post-meeting, Raja Riaz conveyed, “It has been mutually agreed that the interim prime minister would hail from a smaller province.” He further revealed that the suggestion of Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar’s name was presented by him and subsequently endorsed.

The development unfolds in response to President Dr Arif Alvi’s correspondence to PM Shehbaz, reminding them both of their obligation to nominate a “suitable person” for the role of interim premier by August 12 (Saturday). According to Article 224A, this proposal is to be put forth within three days following the dissolution of the National Assembly.

Senator Anwar ul Haq Kakar, now appointed as Pakistan’s caretaker prime minister, emerges as a prominent political figure from Balochistan.

Having secured a Senate seat in 2018, Kakar has been a dynamic and engaged politician. Notably, he previously held the position of spokesperson for the provincial government before his elevation to the upper house.

“Furthermore, the senator maintains favorable relations with key mainstream political parties such as PML-N and PPP.”

Kakar’s political journey began in 2008 when he contested the National Assembly election from Quetta under the Q-League ticket.

Educationally, he holds a Master’s degree in Political Science and Sociology, having graduated from the esteemed University of Balochistan.
