FBR Introduces New Simplified Form for Salaried Employees and Pensioners 2023

Date: August 31, 2023

In a significant move aimed at providing ease and convenience, the government is set to launch a simplified tax return form for the tax year 2023, benefiting around 1.4 million salaried individuals and pensioners. This initiative involves the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) taking action based on directives from the Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) to alleviate the challenges faced by this specific group of taxpayers.

According to an official announcement, the decision to introduce a separate salary return in a simplified format or revise the existing income tax return form was made by the FBR on Wednesday, in response to the concerns raised by the Federal Tax Ombudsman.

An internal investigation initiated by the FTO revealed that the complex nature of the current tax return format was causing difficulties for salaried individuals and pensioners. As a result, the FBR has been instructed to develop a new, streamlined return form specifically tailored to this taxpayer segment within the next 30 days.

The analysis conducted by the FTO highlighted that the existing tax return format is intricate and often contains irrelevant fields for salaried individuals, whose primary source of income is their salary or pension. The complexity of the current format makes it challenging for an average taxpayer to navigate through, and the so-called simplified form provided through software wizards is equally perplexing for those unfamiliar with tax jargon and computer operations.

To address these challenges, the FTO has directed the relevant departments within the FBR to devise a new return form that only includes essential fields relevant to salaried employees and pensioners. This streamlined version of the return can be generated through Artificial Intelligence (AI) using historical tax return data. Additionally, the FTO has emphasized the importance of publicizing this new filing facility to ensure widespread awareness among the salaried and pensioner class.

By implementing this new approach, the government aims to provide a user-friendly and efficient method for salaried individuals and pensioners to fulfill their tax obligations, ultimately promoting compliance and ease of tax filing.
