WhatsApp Expands Channels Feature to Over 150 Countries, Offering Enhanced Updates

Date: September 14, 2023

WhatsApp has announced the global expansion of its Channels feature, allowing users from more than 150 countries to access a private and convenient way to receive updates from individuals and organizations.

Initially introduced in June, the Channels feature was limited to select organizations in Colombia and Singapore. This expansion brings it to a wider audience, offering a similar experience to Telegram’s messaging app, enabling users to receive updates from creators, organizations, and brands through a single channel.

These channels can be found in a dedicated tab called “Updates,” separate from personal chats, making it easier to stay informed about important news and updates without cluttering your chat list.

WhatsApp Channels enable administrators to send text, photos, videos, stickers, and polls to their followers in a one-way broadcast format. Users can also react to posts within channels using emojis, providing a simple way to express their feedback.

Administrators overseeing channels will now have the option to edit their updates for up to 30 days before the posts are deleted from WhatsApp’s servers, offering more control over the content they share.

WhatsApp is set to welcome “thousands” of new channels to its platform, including those managed by notable figures like Olivia Rodrigo, Major League Baseball (MLB), and Mark Zuckerberg. The company plans to continue refining the Channels feature based on user feedback and intends to open up channel creation to anyone in the coming months.

If you don’t see the Channels feature in your WhatsApp app yet, you can join the waitlist on mobile to receive notifications when it becomes available.

Key Features of WhatsApp Channels Include:

  1. Enhanced Directory: Users can easily discover and follow channels filtered by their country or explore new, active, and popular channels based on follower count.
  2. Reactions: Users can express their feedback using emojis, and the total reaction count is visible without revealing individual reactions to followers.
  3. Forwarding: When forwarding updates to chats or groups, a link back to the channel is included for easy access to more information.

WhatsApp continues to evolve and expand its features, enhancing the platform’s capabilities for both individual users and organizations alike.
